PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island's Roman Catholic bishop is calling on U.S. authorities to halt mass immigration raids and says agents who refuse to participate in such raids on moral grounds deserve to be treated as conscientious objectors.

Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin asked for a blanket moratorium on immigration raids until the nation adopts comprehensive immigration reform. Tobin made the requests in a letter sent Tuesday to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Boston.

The letter was released Thursday to The Associated Press.

Tobin's action comes during a heated debate over illegal immigration in heavily Catholic Rhode Island. Authorities recently raided six courthouses looking for illegal immigrant maintenance workers and Gov. Don Carcieri, himself a Catholic, signed an order requiring police and prison officials to identify illegal immigrants for possible deportation.

"We believe that raids on the immigrant community are unjust, unnecessary, and counterproductive," the bishop's letter says. It urges individual federal agents to consider the morality of their actions and refuse to participate if their conscience dictates.

In such cases, he said, "we urge the Federal Government to fully respect the well-founded principles of conscientious objection."

A spokeswoman for ICE, Paula Grenier, said she could not comment.

Roman Catholic and other religious leaders have repeatedly criticized immigration raids that target migrant workers, rather than illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

Tobin's request is unusual because it suggests the raids are forcing immigration agents to choose between their jobs and their religious faith. It's not clear if any agents have objected to the raids.

Tobin is bishop of the Diocese of Providence, which covers the entire state. Some 60 percent of Rhode Island residents call themselves Roman Catholic, a higher percentage than any other state.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called U.S. immigration policies "morally unacceptable," saying they keep families divided and encourage the exploitation of migrants.

" Yeah, and we want Catholic priests to stop raping little children. I guess none of us are going to get what we want, are we, Padre Tobin?

" (ICE) does not discriminate, and therefore if church people get caught offering refuge to 'illegal aliens' NOT IMMIGRANTS. They are likely to be arrested for aiding and abetting. Today! NOW! (ICE) is now being offered intelligence by the public-at-large. The meat processing plants had obviously a whistle blower, who decided enough is enough. That the suspicious activity regarding fraudulent Social Security Numbers and large numbers of individuals who cannot comprehend English was certain to draw attention. NUMBERSUSA. Church members for all their obvious activism, are just supporting the inevitable? Because just like the illegal alien female who took refuge in a Chicago church who thought she could ignore immigration law, finally got arrested and consequently got deported. "

" Brittanicus makes a great point.

Is the Catholic church going to pay reparations to the victims of illegals' identity thefts, so these victims can work to repair their credit, identity, social security records, etc.? The Catholic Church can sell a few gold trinkets they have stored up in the Vatican City to help pay for these reparations, provided they aren't stolen items, taken from exterminated Jewish families during past wars.

Brittanicus mentions the illegal alien who had holed up in one of the Catholic church's buildings for sanctuary.

It is now known that this illegal alien was using a stolen identity, and stolen social security number. WIll the Catholic church pay reparations to the victim(s) of her identity thefts? Why not? If the Catholic church is going to hide and protect perpetrators of identity theft crimes, then it should be willing to pay reparations to the victims of those crimes.

Or is the Catholic church simply out of money from paying reparations to the victims of the pedophile priests, that the Catholic church has spent decades shuffling from location to location, in order to protect the perpetrator priests, while leaving a wake of devastated molested children in their paths?!

It is time for the Catholic church to clean its own filthy house, instead of worrying about something like ICE properly enforcing the laws of our nation. "
