By this time next fall, Wyoming's entire high school football system could be completely different. A new six-man division... reshuffling of the classification system... new conferences... and football is only a small part of a huge agenda for the Wyoming High School Activities Association this fall.

Consequently, Sports Goulash, the Star-Tribune's high school sports blog, has been buzzing all summer.

Reader "Hillsdale" commented on a way to maybe save a little coinage:

"I would prefer that the WHSAA look at 8-man, rather than 6-man, football. I am assuming that the 8-man field that the neighboring states use is the same size as the standard 11-man field. That would maybe keep costs down and give the smaller schools more flexibility as their enrollments fluctuate with our energy economy."

Fall practice began Monday, and every team in the state began with an equal chance of winning a state championship. Of course, championships are not all that's important to hope for on the first day:

"But no matter what, at the end of the season, everyone is better. Win or lose, sports mold character. When the season is done, the personal change is only beginning.

"More than winning a championship, today's hope should be that two-and-a-half months from now, you're a better person because of your involvement in something great -- and greatness has nothing to do with winning or losing."
